Council Approves Phase 1 of ReCode

On November 9, the City Council voted unanimously to adopt a new land use code under Phase I of ReCode, the City’s effort to streamline, modernize, and update its land use code to reflect the goals of the City’s comprehensive plan (Portland’s Plan 2030). Phase I has involved extensive reformatting, restructuring, and updating of the existing code, as well as a concerted look at streamlining and rationalizing particular areas of existing policy, including the city’s Accessory Dwelling Unit, off-street parking, and sign provisions. The result is a well-organized new code, using tables and graphics, that will increase predictability and clarity for users of the code. It will also pave the way for Phase II of the Recode process, which will involve better aligning the code with the vision of Portland's Plan for equitable, sustainable, and thriving neighborhoods. The new code will be in effect December 1st.

Council Approves One Climate Future Plan

On November 9, the City Council approved One Climate Future, the joint climate action and adaptation plan developed in collaboration with the City of South Portland. The plan lays out 68 strategies that will help the City achieve an 80% reduction in community wide greenhouse gas emissions and prepare for the impacts of climate change such as higher sea levels, more powerful storms, and more days of extreme heat. The Sustainability Offices in Portland and South Portland spent eighteen months engaging with thousands of residents through public workshops, online surveys, attending public events, and meeting with community groups. The team also worked with City staff from a variety of departments and a consulting team led by Holly Jacobsen of Linnean Solutions. The Sustainability Office will be holding a public workshop about the plan on Thursday, November 18. You can download the plan and register for the workshop at www.oneclimatefuture.org.

Celebrating Thanksgiving During COVID-19

Traditional Thanksgiving gatherings with family and friends are fun but can increase the chances of getting or spreading COVID-19 or the flu. The safest way to celebrate Thanksgiving this year is to celebrate with people in your household. If you do plan to attend a gathering, bring your own food, drinks, plates, cups, and utensils; wear a mask, and safely store your mask while eating and drinking; avoid going in and out of the areas where food is being prepared or handled, such as in the kitchen; and use single-use options, like salad dressing and condiment packets. Click the link in the headline for more information and guidance from the CDC.

Schedule Change:  Trash Collection Only on Holidays

Going forward on holidays, we will only be picking up trash and not recycling. This went into effect in October. The next holiday is Thanksgiving and the day after Thanksgiving. There will be no trash or recycling picked up on Thanksgiving, Thursday, November 26. The makeup day for those with Thursday collection will be on Saturday, November 28. On Friday, November 27, we will only collect trash, and not recycling.

Those residents affected can either hold their recycling until the following week or take it to Riverside Recycling. Please visit our Trash and Recycling Collection Web App to find what day of the week your trash and recycling is collected. First time here?
