Recent Donation Supports Oxford Street Shelter

Thanks to USI Insurance Services in South Portland for donating $2,000 to the Oxford Street Shelter! Donations help fill gaps that traditional funding streams don't often cover, like copies of birth certificates & ID's needed in employment and housing searches as well as winter gear.

Furman Block in Bayside Opens Bringing 51 Mixed-Income Rental Units Online

Mayor Kate Snyder joined Portland-based developer The Szanton Company on Thursday, January 14 to open the doors of Furman Block, a new 51 unit mixed-income building that offers apartments for those 55+ above street-level commercial space. The seven-story Furman Block is situated in West Bayside, at the corner of Kennebec and Parris Streets. The land was made possible by the City’s sale of its former Public Works property. The City also provided financial assistance in order to make the project a reality. The project also includes six units set aside for long-term stayers coming out of Portland’s homeless shelters.

City Updates Interpretation of Rent Control Ordinance

We’ve released additional clarification to our official interpretation of the rent control ordinance, passed by voters in November 2020. The City first released its guidance on December 4. In response to questions received from members of the public, the City has provided clarification that the rent control ordinance applies to both long-term and short-term rentals. As such, short-term rentals will have to submit newly-required information annually, abide by the caps placed on rent increases, and follow many of the other mandates outlined in the ordinance. Christmas Tree Drop off Locations

When you’re ready to get your Christmas tree out of your house, you can place them curbside during the month of January on your normal trash collection day or drop them off at the following two locations:

  • Cutter Street Parking Lot - Eastern Prom (upper lot on right, not sliding hill lot)
  • Payson Park - Salt Shed Area by the little league area.

Please note that the Douglas Street location is not a drop-off spot. Trees dropped off at Cutter Street or Payson Park will be taken to Riverside Recycling and chipped up. Christmas trees collected curbside will be co-mingled with trash and taken to ecomaine.
